Are You Really as Invisible as You Feel?

On more than one occasion over the years someone I’m talking with will say, “Pastor, I feel invisible. No one seems to really see me unless they need something, and then they don’t see me, they just see a dispenser for their need.” Have you ever felt that way, as if you don’t really matter, as if you are participating in life but no one really cares, as if you are invisible in a world that you can see but apparently doesn’t see you?

God sees you. You are not invisible to Him. I can prove it. Consider just these three verses (there are so many more):

2 Chronicles 16:9 (ESV)
9  For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to give strong support to those whose heart is blameless toward him.”

Psalm 34:15 (ESV)
15  The eyes of the LORD are toward the righteous and his ears toward their cry.

Proverbs 15:3 (ESV)
3  The eyes of the LORD are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good.

Everywhere you are, everything you do, you, your whole person, your heart, mind, spirit, will, and body are under the watchful care of the One who made you, Who loves you, Who gave His only Son to suffering and death in order to draw you again to Himself. God sees you with the eyes of One who set your destiny, who wrote the sum of your days in His book before one of those days ever dawned.

God sees you as One who sees not just you in your personal, inner context, but all that concerns you in the broadest possible context. God sees you as you fit into His plan for the universe. He sees the import and impact of your life not just on your own experience, but on the quality of countless lives connected to yours in ways you can’t even imagine. You are like an exquisite diamond and God sees you for what you are and for the setting you are in!

And don’t you just love that picture in 2 Chronicles that God is not merely passively glancing your direction or gazing in some uncomprehending stupor at the immensity of time, but He is actively overseeing, running to and fro, shepherding and directing and caring and guiding and healing and feeding and taking care of 10 bazillion details all at one and not getting a single one confused with another.

Of course, if God were not for you His watchfulness might be meaningless to you. But He is for you. His eyes are “toward” you and His ears are “inclined” to your cry. God is paying attention to you, how you are feeling, what you are thinking, what you are experiencing, how you are reacting and responding and He extends love, mercy, grace, and wisdom to you as you live in Jesus and in the light of His glory.

You are not invisible, nor or you simply visible as a face in the crowd. You are God’s child, and just as your Mom always seemed to have eyes in the back of her head, God’s loving eyes are upon you. You are not invisible.
