Romans: A Letter to Disciples Who Make Disciples

For many Christians, Paul’s inspired letter to the Romans is difficult. It is a letter graced with abundant theology, calls to holiness, and even end time predictions regarding Israel. It is steeped in mystery and exudes glory. Some Christians think of Romans like a treasure chest, the contents are truly valuable but you can only handle so much before you go into overload.

The reality, however, is that God intends to be known through His word. That means His word, and His intent for His word, should be knowable, understandable, applicable. Romans is all of these. Together we are undertaking a journey to know, understand, and apply both the content and the intent of Romans.

Romans is a letter to disciples who make disciples. It is, on at least one very important level, a missionary support letter. Paul, the itinerant missionary, longs to travel to Spain to preach the gospel. When the time comes for that journey, he wants to stop in Rome, spend time with them, then have them help him on his mission. In Romans, Paul introduces himself, sets out his message (the gospel), argues for preaching the gospel to everyone–Jew and Gentile alike–calls the Romans to personal and corporate alignment with the gospel, invites their active participation in the mission to Spain, and then sends warm closing greetings and blessing to family, friends, and acquaintances in Rome.

To disciples who make disciples Paul sends an invitation: Get the gospel right and get the gospel out. It is that invitation the Spirit sends to us and that we are exploring in this extended exposition of Romans.
